NVIDIA has brought its new GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs to laptops and all of them are VR (Virtual Reality) ready. The new generation includes the GTX 1050, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, and GTX 1080. The most powerful GPU is, of course, the GTX 1080 which is the successor to the GTX980M.
Surprisingly, NVIDIA has dropped the “M” although there are still some differences between the GTX 1080 for laptops and the desktop GTX 1080. It is still the mobile counterpart but its performance is comparable to the desktop version now. The performance is said to be around 90% of the desktop version.
The GTX 1080 is powered by the same NVIDIA Pascal architecture, the same 2560 CUDA cores, 256-bit memory interface, and 8GB of GDDR5X memory. The performance of the GPU is a little lower than its desktop version but it is still more powerful than the desktop GTX 1070 and faster than GTX 980 SLI. Therefore, we should have no problems play 4K or VR games.
Besides, the chip also offers some new features like DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, HDR, SMP, or improved H.265 video en- and decoders. The only disadvantage of the GPU is its high TDP of 180W, that means it will require a high-performing cooling solution in a bulky laptop.
We’ve seen the new GTX 1080 in some laptops from MSI, Alienware, or Acer. Following is a list of all gaming laptops powered by GeForce GTX 1080.
